Little Tools for Teaching

It's early morning and I'm drifting in and out of sleep. I dream that I'm a substitute in a classroom with only 3 students, two girls and a boy. The room is dark orange with little tools for teaching except a whiteboard and a marker that's drying up. I have no lesson plan except a list of subjects to teach. One subject is "social studies" so I decide to do a lesson about the 7 continents. I say to the kids, "Let's have a contest to see who can list all the 7 continents." I hunt for paper and pencils for them and can't find enough for all 3 students.

Then a teacher enters the room and tells me I have a message. I assume I need to call home. I go outside at a table and pick up a thing that has a radio dial on the side that, instead of showing where you are on the dial for stations, it shows little pictures that are crooked that remind me of those little signs that come up in an old fashioned magic 8-ball with the liquid inside. I try to figure out how to make a phone call on it when I remember I have my regular cell phone in my purse.

I never get my message because it's now time to go back to work. I enter the classroom and a picture that shows a tank with bundles like tarp rolled up being pulled by an elephant reads: What technologies will we see in the future? It reads "Science," "Engineering,"(that was represented by those strange bundles) and--I think---"Space."
