Hello everyone, I have been having a strange dream involving my mother for the past several months. I have talked with my therapist about it, but she has not been very successful, in helping me understand this dream. A little background; I am 24 years old, I have been living independently for the past 4 years. Previously I lived with my single mother. She currently resides in another state, however we keep in contact, and have a healthy relationship. Alright, now on to the dream.

The dream starts with me standing in green field of grass. My mother stands facing me. She always is wearing a clean white dress that covers her feet. We stand looking at each other for some time, then out of nowhere my mother falls forward. I always catch her in my arms, as if I knew that this would happen. When I look down at her, her eyes are closed and she is unconscious, it always seems like I know that as well, because I never fear for her safety, I always know that she is simply unconscious. At that point I pick her up and start carrying her while I walk across the field. I always walk for a really long time, always noticing how limp my mother is in my arms. After walking for a while, I suddenly have the urge to lay her down on the ground. I lay her down on the grass and she remains unconscious. Now this is where the dream gets really strange. When I set her down, it extends her legs and I realize that she is barefoot. Somehow this triggers an immense sadness in the dream, as I almost start crying at the fact that my mother is barefoot. I then start noticing just how small and vulnerable she looks, as she lays unconscious. But for some reason the main point of my attention stays focused on her bare feet, as they seem to amplify the sorrow that I suddenly feel. It seems that at that point I always revert to a childlike state in the dream, as my first instinct is to hold on to my mothers bare feet like a child. The dream usually ends with me holding my moms bare feet close, while she remains laying on the ground deeply unconscious.

As you can see very strange. I would appreciate any sort of interpretation, or response, because in all honesty, i'm beginning to worry about my sanity.

Could this have something to do with you becoming more independent and having more responsibility as an adult, maybe even thinking about having children of your own?

When you are very young, you see your parents as superheroes who can do anything and whom you can depend on completely. As you get older, you realize that your parents are just normal people with weaknesses and flaws (even though you still admire them and respect them.)

Maybe now that you are on your own you are starting to see your mother's weaknesses and compare yourself to her and think about how you will handle your life in comparison to how she handled her life. How old was she when she gave birth to you? Was it close to the age you are now?

You could also be starting to think about the fact that as you grow older, your mother will grow older still and need your care.

About the shoes, babies don't wear shoes until they are ready to start learning to walk, so that also has to do with the idea of becoming independent.

    Marcia.

Thank you so much for responding to my post. I have posted on several different forums and people seem to not want to share their opinions as much as you would think.

Forgive me, but I would really like to give you a little more info on the situation. I left out quite a few things in my previous post, as to not overburden people with information. First off, when I said dream, what I really meant was dreams, as there have been many of them and they happen quit frequently. Currently I have one at least once a week. They are never EXACTLY the same, but they always have the same outcome; my mother unconscious, me carrying her, and the sight of her without shoes triggering a sadness or longing.

The way my mother becomes unconscious varies as well. Sometimes she faints, other times she is knocked out somehow. In one dream she was even in a full on boxing match. There have been a couple dreams where I have actually rendered her unconscious MYSELF. Once by throwing a ball that flew too fast, and once by simply thinking about her fainting. Both times I knew that my actions would lead to her becoming unconscious, yet I still went through with them.

About the feet. Almost every single dream that my mother has ever appeared in, she has been barefoot. This is especially strange because I have almost never seen my mother barefoot in real life. I remember noticing this when I was younger. One time I asked her why she would never go barefoot, she avoided the question and when I asked her again later, she actually got angry and yelled at me, asking why I wanted to know so much about her feet. Eventually she told me that being barefoot makes her feel too exposed. Something to note; there have been dreams where I have noticed my mothers bare feet before she became unconscious, it is only after she is laying on the ground that they trigger these emotions. There is also one dream I remember that was semi lucid, as in I didn't know I was dreaming, but I knew that I could control the dream. This is the only dream I remember, where my mother had shoes on when she fainted, and you will never guess what the first thing I did was, that's right, took off her shoes, even though I knew that would trigger the emotions.

As for what you said in you're comment, my mother was 33 when she gave birth to me, so not that close to my age. You're right about the responsibility part, it was very difficult to adjust to living alone at first. However after 4 years I would like to think that I am pretty well adjusted. As for having kids, honestly I have not even decided if I will ever have kids, let alone now.

I like to think as most of my dreams as metaphors, or subconscious thoughts. But I am having a lot of trouble making any kind of sense out of these dreams with my mother.

Again, any thoughts or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
