Last night I bought a house. I was driving to my house together with my parents. Once we got to the right area, I was a bit embarrassed since I realised that I had bought the house without visiting it first and I couldn’t remember the exact street address. After having been looking at so many house-ads on the web, I could not remember which one I hade actually gone ahead and bought, which I suppose is very rash and unwise from a house-buying perspective. All the houses seemed familiar to me and I just walked in to the one that looked most familiar. We walked around inside the house and the house seemed to contain mostly storage facilities; wardrobes, cupboards, closets, cellar rooms etc but no actual rooms to spend time in. Every door we opened lead to another room full of drawers and closets. The rooms had no windows but all rooms were painted white. Since I thought it the house that I had bought, I tried to explain away this fact to my mother by saying that I actually needed a lot of storage space. She also started to rationalise and comfort me, saying; “Well, some of these rooms could actually be converted to real rooms, I guess.” After we had walked through the house (a house painted in yellow and red on the outside– awful!) a short black man walked in through the front door and just looked at us, as if we were completely mad. He was the Real Estate Agent that I had been communicating with while buying the house.

He asked us what we were doing there. “This is not the house that you have bought, you know. But I assume that YOU know that...?!” A bit embarrassed, we nodded and followed him down the street and all the way down to the sea. Just by the sea was a small white house, almost hanging out over the waterfront. That was my house. All of a sudden, I was in my house with loads of friends preparing to stay there that same night. I realized that I had not yet paid for the house or signed the final papers, but since I felt it was mine I just moved in right away. At first, the house looked very small, but as we walked around inside, I realised that it had a huge upstairs with loads of rooms full of stuff. I started to calculate how many bed-spaces it had in order to find room for my friends for the evening. It seemed like some of the rooms were still occupied by the people who had lived there before, but they let me peek into their rooms and calculate beds. Beside the house was some kind of jointly owned house, which I owned with my neighbours. They explained to me that it was my turn to redecorate the vast joint-spaces. I also looked at the surroundings of my house and decided to start right away, building terraces and a pier into the water. The entire house was going to be surrounded by balconies and terraces, making it even bigger. The house was massive and there were loads of new spaces to discover, all through the dream. I realised that it was a very good deal.

The only thing that worried me in the dream was the fact that it seemed to be far from the city and thus, far from work.

I know that houses are to represent yourself in a dream, but what about entering the wrong house, believing it is yours and then finding the right house? And what about all the strange people living in my house? What about buying a house without even inspecting it first?

About entering the wrong house, perhaps you are currently in a situation that feels wrong to you. Can you think of anything that this would fit?

Believing it is yours makes me think that you are carrying some responsibilities that you don't need to. Do you have trouble saying "No" to people?

As for all the people in your house, you may need some time to yourself. Are you stretching yourself too thin?

The last question makes me think that you leaped before you looked. You volunteeringly got into a situation that you are now regretting. Does this resonate with you?

    Ponderings about my dream

    Thank you for your reply.

Well all of the things you mentioned are true about me. I am also in a situation that feels wrong to me, but I had this dream AFTER having taken measures to resolve that situation i e the dream would then be telling me something that I already know. I dont think dreams do that, so the main message must be something else.

Yes, I do have troubles saying "no" and I do shoulder a lot of responsibilities and worry about things that are really not my problem. That interpretation does ring true to me.

I think that the first house, the "wrong house", might be the me that I see myself as, and the second house is more truly what I am or could become. The first house is just a large storage facility, unlivable, cold, clinical, with every door leading to another room full of secrets and memories and thoughts. A house, not fit for living in -only a container. Come to think of it the first hourse, looked very much like a clinic of some sort. The second house in on the water, hanging dramatically out over the sea. It is more of a home and it showed greater potential once you walked into it. It also needed a lot of work. It was opened to a lot of good friends and activity.

I do not know when I ever leaped before I looked. I just never do that. I am quite the opposite. I am more a person who would miss the opportunity because I consider everything too thouroghly before I decide. I would just NEVER buy a house without examining it, inch by inch. It is very out of charachter. (Plus, I am a lawyer and know all the "dangers" when buying property). Maybe it is more a dream telling me to leap before I look, for once?

    Re: Ponderings about my dream

You're welcome. The words you use to describe the second house could be a metaphor for what you want out of life. Perhaps what you need to look at are those things in your life that need work but offer great potential.

    Good Luck!
