BACKGROUND: I had this dream at the very end of January in 2002. The weather had been fairly pleasant, nothing nasty in the forecast. I lived in a two bedroom apartment with a roomate, Erik, this guy I had been friends with since Junior High (no feelings for him or anything like that). The apartment went living room, my bedroom, hallway, bathroom off the hall, kitchen, with the second bedroom off to one side, and the back entryway off to the other. Now here we go. I wake up in the dream. I was sleeping on the couch in the living room, because for some reason, Erik was sleeping in my bed. Before I laid down on the couch, I closed the french doors between my bedroom and the livingroom, to cut off the sound of his snores. I can hear thunder outside, as well as large crackling noises, crashes and thumps (unrelated to the thunder). The sky is eerily clouded. I look towards the french doors, they are being pulled open slowly. On the far side of my bedroom, hunched-like in the doorway to the hall, is a man. I've never seen him before, and yet he looks familiar, and also somehow, fluid. I jump up and walk quickl toward him, but he does this odd dissolving thing, into a puddle-like substance. I can still see his features and clothes, and he slides away to the back door and slips beneath it. I move back toward my bed and try to wake Erik up, but he just mumbles. I try to turn on the light, and realize the electricity is out. I hear a creak, and He/It is hunched in the doorway to the hall again, grinning at me. I chase Him/It out the back door again, and then sit down in front of the door, waiting for It to come back. It does, after not even two minutes, and I grab It. It squirms, then gets free and slips back under the door. I catch hold of it again at the last second, but it just flows through my fingers. I cram a towel into the space at the bottom of the door, and go climb into my bed. I try to wake Erik up again, to no avail, so I just lie back and stare at the constellations I put on my bedroom ceiling and walls. I hear a low chuckle from near the wall, and look at the central heat/air vent on the ceiling. The vent cover is off, and He/It has a hand on either side of the opening, his head sticking out, and is working himself out of the vent. His grin is pure lunacy, and I scream. I wake up to actual reality, still screaming. The odd thing is, when I went to sleep, the weather was still clear and fairly nice. When I woke up, it was about 8 am, by my watch. The electricity was out, the sky looked strange, and I could hear the thunder. An ice storm started while I was sleeping, the crackling, crashing and thumping I heard in the dream were the sounds of the trees breaking under the weight of the ice, only when I woke up they weren't breaking yet. That started happening about two hours later. I've been curious about this since then, it is by far the creepiest dream I've had...in my adult life, anyway.
Wow! I wonder if the liquid man may have been one of your shadows--you know, a shadow part of your personality or psyche that you don't reveal to others. You do grab him at one point, so perhaps this is a side you may need. For example, if you have a temper, you may have kept it under wraps for a long time. However, you may need to re-introduce this shadowy side just a little. It may be telling you that you need some assertiveness in a particular situation. As for the crackling and crashing sounds, I've experienced this phenomonon too. I've heard loud crashes and even gun shots, only to wake up and have there be nothing. Fascinating!
You know, that makes a lot of sense. At the time, I was getting irate at the roomate, he kept taking all my things off the mantle (I lived there first, and he moved in later) and putting his up instead. He kept insisting that he should get the "big bedroom", even though I paid more of the rent and bills than he did, he was eating all my food and not buying any. And he had this habit of talking badly about my fiance, they didn't get along. I was patient about it for a bit, but after that ice storm, I kicked him out and my fiance, now husband, moved in.
