I had a dream recently where I was looking at a wise man but out of the corner of my right eye, in the bare of my peripheral vision, I could see a demon. I looked at the demon and he had red eyes. He appeared as a normal man except for the eyes. He looked back at me. We saw each other in the dream. He disappeared and I could not find him again in the dream.

I woke up and I felt somebody was in the room with me but I was alone. The feeling persisted for several minutes. I was not afraid of the feeling. The odd thing is that I have felt this demon in my mind several times while I was awake since that dream.

At this point, I have been recording my dreams since 1992. I have written down several hundred dreams and done some analysis. There have been many symbols in my dreams that I have figured out over time. When I wake up I see the symbol in my thoughts or my feelings and I can pierce the veil of shadow to understand the waking object as a collection of memories. With this ability I have been able to remove many difficult feelings over the past 20 years.

I know what the demon is or I suspect what it is. Does anybody have an idea?

I seem to remember that Jung stated that he believed symbols from the unconscious or archetypes where separate consciousness from our own and that we can perceive these separate entities in our thoughts while we sleep and dream. Does anybody remember the exact article or book where he discusses this or any other reference to separate entities in our dreams? I would like to discover if this demon is some other part of my psyche or a separate consciousness invading my thoughts.

Hi. It does sound like the demon could be your Shadow. Is that what you are thinking of?
The feeling of an "evil presence" is also associated with sleep paralysis.
It is though that sleep paralysis could be a remnant of tonic immobility, the condition in which a prey animal suddenly becomes paralyzed after being seized by a predator. it's believed that the sense of being watched by an evil being has to do with our ancestors once having been at threat from real predators.
There's a theory that REM sleep evolved from tonic immobility. So this colud be a natural part of your sleep cycle.

I've had dreams of seeing demons before and its terrifying. These demons take the form of familiar people such as family members. Their eyes don't glow red but they have an expression that reads pure hate, or evil. I can't imagine something like that being a part of me, so where did it come from? And these dreams seem to come out of nowhere, although I've had them at stressful times in my life as well. I too have been keeping a dream journal for years and another method I try is to imagine talking to the dream character and see what they tell you. I can't recall having done that with the most terrifying dream characters, however. But it may be worth a try---if you dare.
