many people, especially novice lucid dreamers, are bound to remember a lucid dream if they awaken directly from it.but most will try to prolong it as far as they can,so if they dont awaken directly from one,and lucidity ends, the normal dreaming that follows,as far as ive read will make the lucid one so vague when you try to remember your dreams on awakening, that youll think the memories are ust bits of a non lucid dream(if you even remember atall),so how can you remember your lucid ones?
It's impossible to remember all of your dreams, lucid or non-lucid, because your memory stores don't work the same way when you are asleep as when you are awake. You are only going to remember the dreams you have before you wake up. (It's possible that you only awaken very briefly and dont realize that you were awake, but you were.) That's why in dream studies, researchers wake people up at various times during the sleep cycle and ask them what they were dreaming just as they woke up. Maybe you can have someone watch you sleep and then wake you in the middle of what looks like REM sleep. There are techniques to help you remember your dreams better. You can read about some of them in the Dream Recall section of this website. They work for both lucid and non-lucid dreams.
What helped me to remember is upon waking up in the morning, it's best not to move at all...stay still and start to recall images. After a bit, the images will appear..you keep going back as far as you can until no more. The more you do this the more you'll be able to remember them. It's like training your mind to get use to this routine every day.
That's a good idea, Heart. It probably also helps to allow yourself to wake up naturally, rather than with an alarm clock. Both of these techniques might have to be saved for the weekend.
