No, not Political Correctness. I'm way pass saving with regards to that silly thing. My PC crashed a couple of weeks ago. The only way I could get it to work again was to format the C: drive. Which I have done 4 times now. Problem 1. No sound. I've re-installed Multimedia time and time again. I've updated new drivers time and time again. Still no sound. Have I got to get a new Sound card? Problem 2. I'm unable to log in to the Terry Pratchett Books Message Board. I can do it from work (but we are not allowed to post). As you can see I can log on to this site. I've checked all the settings under Tools. I'm allowing or enabling everything. Can anybody throw some light on to? Thank you.
Okay, I'm not an expert by any stretch but I've had a few similiar experiences. Please ignore any patronising pointers. Problem 1: Do you run Windows? if so do you have a speaker icon in the lower right of the screen in the taskbar? right click the icon and select open volume controls Make sure that the volume level is not completly lowered and that mute is not selected. Problem 2: Problems logging in are usually due to cookie settings in tools. What browser do you use? also, what's the web url? I could give it a go see what happens.
As you can tell I'm not a computer expert either. Problem (1) If only it was that simple. No icon to click on. I've tried Sounds in control panel, Very dull as in I'm not able to click on anything. I've uninstalled and re-installed Multimedia a few times. I keep getting told that it isn't installed correctly. Problem (2) All cookies are set to enable any stuff to be loaded. All cookies that I can see that is. I use internet explorer. The url is: http://www.terrypratchettbooks.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi I can look at it but I can't log on. if I try to re-register I'm told: Sorry, we were unable to find your age information. It appears that your browser did not send the information to us properly. Please make sure your browser accepts cookies from this UBB. You can not register or log in without cookies. Does this throw more light on to the subject.
Under the privacy options in tools click advanced then tick overide automatic cookie handling, then put a check in the allow per session cookies.... assuming you run ie6. Or have you done that already?
or, through control panel/internet options/privacy, if you have it set to high it will not allow servers to read or use cookies...
I know is must be getting tiresome, it is for me. All settings are set to accept cookies. All other settings are either set to enable or prompt. I just can’t figure it out. I went to PC world with my ‘No Sound’ problem. I told the teenage assistant that my PC was four-year-old. He gave me a looked of disbelief and said I need a new PC. Great help. He must be on commission. Thanks for all your help. I'll try and get somebody in to take a look at it.
The teen was right though; even if he is working for PC World, obviously don't buy one from them though....
