    Hi the dreamer.

What you experienced was sleep paralysis. When you are asleep and dreaming most of the muscles in your body become paralysed. Many scientists believe that this is so you don't hurt yourself when you act out your dreams.

However, sometimes your brain gets a bit confused and you become paralysed before you've completely fallen asleep or after you've already woken up. So you are conscious but still paralysed as though you were asleep.

It's also common to have hallucinations as you are falling asleep. These are called hypnagogic hallucinations. These types of hallucinations often accompany sleep paralysis.

Neither of these things are harmful. However, sleep paralysis is often accompanied by a strong feeling of fear. The best thing you can do when this happens is to try to tell yourself to relax and not fight it.

You can find more information about sleep paralysis in the lucid dreaming section of this website.
