What exactly is Synchronicity?

Synchronicity is when two or more events seem to come together by chance; like when you are walking along the street thinking about someone you haven’t seen in a while, and there they are standing right in front of you. Or when you send someone an email to ask them something at the same time they call you on the phone. The theory of Synchronicity is that there is no such thing as a coincidence or, at least, coincidences are not merely random occurrences.

Synchronicity is often thought of as a spiritual happening, similar to being psychic but on a grander scale; when you consciously think about what you want a kind of subconscious message is sent outwards as energy that connects with a higher universal energy or collective consciousness. Sometimes this higher energy responds by reflecting a sympathetic energy right back at you, which results in you coming into contact with the people that can help you achieve what you want. For instance you may be running late to meet a friend and didn’t have time to eat; on the way there you are feeling hungry and wondering the whole time if you’ll be able to eat something soon, only to find the friend you are meeting has decided to buy you a sandwich or a cake for no reason they can think of other than being nice. Sort of lending weight to the phrase, ‘the universe will provide.’

Carl Jung was the first person to coin the term ‘Synchronicity’ in this context; he spent a lot of time studying ‘meaningful coincidences’ unrelated by casual events, as described by his patients. He based his ideas on a theory that the universe and everything in it was somehow interconnected. A curious event occurred while Jung was talking to a patient about their dreams, she got to a point in her dream that included a golden scarab beetle, at the same time a very similar beetle appeared at the window of the room Jung and his patient were occupying, the doctor had heard it tapping at the glass and went to open the window when the creature flew inside.

Of course it doesn’t mean you can influence Synchronicity to the point of wishing a million dollars would come through your mail box, but Synchronicity theorists do believe you can dramatically change your life by being more creative in the things you strive for, think outside the box and make firm decisions about what you want out of life. Once you permanently adopt this attitude, you should find that the positive coincidences heading your way increase; you could even take notes on how your life improves.

A word of caution though, don’t rest easy and expect the universe to provide everything for you without having to put any of the work in yourself; carry on relying on your intuition as well as making firm positive decisions about your future and you can’t go far wrong.

You may wonder what all this has to do with dreams? Well, quite a lot actually! Our dreams our often a reflection of our ‘actual’ desires and needs, more real than the needs we perceive in waking life. So, by analyzing and interpreting our dreams and, through this, our spiritual needs and wants, we can focus our attentions on these things in our day to day lives and attract the synchronicity of the universe to brings these things into our lives!
